How do you pay homage to a genius? In the view of many in the entertainment world, Buddy Rich was a genius - he was also "the world's greatest drummer". Beginning in Las Vegas in 1966, at a time when everyone in the music business thought big bands were dead, he stood conventional wisdom on its head by creating the critically acclaimed Buddy Rich Big Band, leading it until his death in 1987.
Disdainful of nostalgia, he enlisted some of the best jazz arrangers and writers available, including Oliver Nelson, Bill Holman, Shorty Rodgers, Sammy Nestico, and Bill Reddie, to name a few, creating a library of jazz music that reflected his tastes, his unbelievable musical ability, and the sounds of jazz today. In the process, he further developed his one-of-a-kind approach to the big band and pursued concert jazz as an art form, in a way that was unique and intensely personal, defining the benchmark of jazz drumming that persists even today.
The Buddy Project Big Band is a working tribute to the music of Buddy Rich, thrilling audiences while teaching young musicians how to play jazz in a big band environment, inspired by the technique and style of the ultimate pyrotechnic master of the drumset.
